At a Wine and Cheese Evening kindly organised by the Great Kingshill Residents Association, branch member Peter Charles, spoke about his remarkable 1,500 mile pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostelo in 2016.
Cherry Tree Farm Barn was filled with local residents, friends and members of our Branch eager to hear Peter’s reminiscences.
As usual, Peter spoke honestly and very amusingly about the difficulties he encountered en route and the amazing kindnesses from complete strangers. He paid tribute to the many friends who had shared parts of his journey, thanking them for ‘putting up’ with his company for days on end! Peter has raised in more than £70,000 for the Parkinson’s UK.
John Gollege, Chair of GKRA, had chosen cheeses and wines from the areas through which Peter had walked which complemented the traveller’s tales. An enjoyable evening was had by all. The Resident’s Association have kindly donated all profits from the evening to Parkinson’s Amersham & High Wycombe Branch – an amazing £1,002.
One of the donors to Peter’s fundraising recently contacted him. He is 63 and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s three years ago. As a consequence of reading about Peter’s pilgrimage, he is planning to walk the main Camino route in Spain – about 550 miles. Peter met him recently to help by sharing his experience and giving advice.
His name? Mr Walker.
