Lesley Shaw, our dance leader, says was privileged to attend the Foundation for Community Dance two-day “Introduction to Dance for Parkinson’s” summer school at De Montfort University, Leicester.
Led by David Leventhal from Mark Morris Dance Group and Brooklyn Parkinson’s Group, USA, in association with the Dance for Parkinson’s Network UK, the course incorporated both analytical and practical approaches for a Parkinson’s Dance Programme, whilst focusing on the artistic imperative.
Lesley says “The course was very well organised, providing an opportunity not only to learn new concepts and skills from highly experienced practitioners, but also to network with other local and international participants. It culminated in a dance class with a local Parkinson’s Group, where we all experienced how David and other course professionals conduct their classes. A highlight from this session for me was everyone dancing together to a segment from the musical ‘West Side Story’.
“David Leventhal is an incredibly generous, creative, experienced and inspiring dancer and teacher. He suggested that if an exercise programme were to be developed which best suited and benefited people with Parkinson’s, it would turn out to be a dance class – how fortunate are we!”
