A group of invited friends and supporters gave Peter the Pilgrim a rousing welcome home at the beginning of a tea party at Holy Trinity Church, Prestwood on 12 November. Peter was last to arrive and entered the church to suitably triumphal music and loud cheers.
During the first half of the afternoon there were poetry readings from Judy Theobald, John Smith and Peter himself. Peter’s two best friends, who accompanied him throughout his walk to Spain, took centre stage – his boots! – and John Smith took the opportunity to thank all Peter’s sponsors including Fox’s Outdoor of Amersham who provided the boots.
After tea and a very special cake we had several presentations:
- Thanking Peter on behalf of our Branch, Trevor Owen, Chairman, presented him with a specially commissioned picture, drawn by Fraser Parsons, illustrating various points of interest that Peter saw on his travels.
- Shirley Jones, Area Manager, West England, Parkinson’s UK spoke about Peter’s fundraising efforts, thanking him and presenting him with a certificate of achievement.
- Peter presented Shirley with a cheque for his latest total of £66,000.
- John Smith presented Wendy Charles with a bouquet for her role in supporting (allowing!) Peter’s pilgrimage.
It was a splendid afternoon and special thanks go to lots of helpers, including John Smith who organised the event, Judy Theobald who wrote and read out a poem specially for the occasion, and everyone who helped set up the church and organise the catering – Janet Smith, Dorothy Salathiel, Sue and Duncan Keir and Judy Theobald.
